Residential + Mixed Use

45–47 Chalk Farm Road

Ferdinand Place is a small road, to the back of Chalk Farm Road in Camden. Although it contains a number of interesting 19thC warehouses, it had slowly become little more than a service area with loading bays, garages and vacant space above the shops that front Chalk Farm Road. A lack of oversight and any occupation after daylight hours, meant that the street had become a focus for crime.

Our brief, was to bring life back into the street by making use of two vacant buildings on either side of the road. Within the two buildings we were able to create new street entrances and 14 flats that have terraces and balconies that look directly onto the street.

In the larger warehouse, two flexible business units with new entrances onto Ferdinand Place were formed from loading areas on the ground floor. We also created a new extension clad in pre-oxidised copper that houses two flats and individual roof terraces. Solar panels and a bio-diversity roof are contained on the roof extension. The development has helped to restore a healthier balance of living and working spaces and re-energise the environment of this small street
