Foster Wilson Size have recently undertaken a series of alterations to the Barbican Concert Hall stage and a major refurbishment of the Orchestra dressing rooms.
Working with Theatreplan theatre consultants, we undertook an ‘invisible’ refurbishment of the fluted wooden panels of the stage and designed the architectural elements of a new Piano Lift, that appears as a cube of gold anodised mesh when elevated above stage level.
The new dressing rooms, upgrade the previous very basic dressing room facilities and incorporate new joinery, furniture and lighting that relates in detail to the beautifully crafted materials found elsewhere in the Barbican.
The dressing room refurbishment was accomplished in a very short dark period of only 5 weeks. Under-pinning our design approach has been a desire to work carefully with the existing building fabric and the original design ethos of the Barbican. The improvements provide the Barbican Concert Hall with a much higher standard of comfort to all their dressing rooms.
